When Misao was a child, Aoshi and his four commrades took care of her as her guardians. She loved each of them dearly despite their oddities. However, as they get older, Aoshi must come to grips with the fact that Misao isn't the child he left behind, and Misao considers Aoshi her only love.
Aoshi's four comrades are his closest companions. He considers each one of them his friends and he trained all four of them himself. They pledge their lives to him and die to save him.
The last four remaining members of the Oniwaban haven't had much interaction with Aoshi, but they are still a part of his extended family.
The oldest member of the Oniwaban declining becoming the leader because of his age and gave the position to Aoshi instead. He respects Aoshi's skill, but during the Kyoto Arc, he disapproves of Aoshi joining Shishio and tries to stop him.
For most of the first and second season, Aoshi wants only one thing - to kill Kenshin. But after Kenshin gets through his thick skull, the two of them become friends to a certain extent.
